Ill sum it up as the best piece of equipment Ive ever bought for my home gym. It's easy to put together and works exactly as described...I also bought the stand to go with it. I was on the fence about buying it because of some of the negative reviews about putting it together. I just dont understand how anyone had any difficulty putting this together? Its actually embarrassing that you had trouble with 22 or so bolts. Lego sets are harder than this.

I’ve owned the select tech 1090 dumbbells for a number of years and just recently purchased the 2080 bar set. As with the dumbbells, this is a well constructed piece of equipment and great home gym addition. Unfortunately I believe the upgrade is a necessity and wish it actually could be expanded more. Even on sale the upgrade set is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. This really should be a $50 expansion. I’d like to get the stand as well, but can’t justify an additional $200 for it.

I very much like the comfort and fit of both the straight and bent bars. The ability to switch bar types definitely increases the utility of this product. Set up is not difficult but it takes a little dialing in to get the bars to fit snuggly and smoothly in the weight cradle. I would prefer the bars be about six inches longer (wider) to fit a standard size weight bench or rack to add a little more versatility. One must get used to carrying the bar around with weights pre set- that is, because you can only adjust the weight in the cradle, you cannot change weights on a bench or on a weight rack. That is just one disadvantage to this concept. But, otherwise, you get a lot of options from one set. Adding the 80-120lb option helps further, but at a premium, unfortunately.

WARNING: the packaging for this is terrible. Lots of broken Styrofoam from in the box and pellets will get everywhere. I would prefer if they used something more environmentally friendly like rigid cardboard. More importantly there are STAPLES in the packaging that holds all the bolts and screws you need to assemble the base. I have NEVER ran into this before building anything, shame on bowflew for using staples you cant see until they stab you.

Now for the normal review. Assembly of the base was straight forward, there are 2 screw holes that were not tapped well but all the other holes were smooth and thread in fine. I really like the weights. They are causing me less pain then lifting standard dumbbells so I am able to weight train more consistently. The handles are knurled (when they carve a grip pattern into the metal) which I love and wish their kettle bell had. Its easy and satisfying to adjust the weights however re racking them can be tricky because they have to drop into specific slots on the other plates. Overall for a full 2 bar it is quite compact and I'm happy I got it. I WOULD NOT however pay the full $700 price for it. To me the cheaper Chinese brands and having more space taking up is worth it. That $500 is just about the max I was willing to shell out for this type of equipment. I do recommend this for $500 for your home gym unless you are a person that drops their weights, you cant do that with any bowflex products to my knowledge.

PROS: I really like that the length of the bar has been shortened from a standard barbell length, especially considering the available weight to purchase is much lighter than a typical commercial gym. It makes it much safer/practical to wield in confined spaces (i.g. not going to smash a lamp or tv in a condo). Similarly, I also appreciate the reduced profile of the weight plates. Once racked, changing the weight is extremely quick and easy, and the weight feels very sturdy and evenly balanced on the bar. The knurling on the bar is consistent and there are evenly spaced hand grips.

CONS: This is very. very, very light weight for a barbell of any kind, even with the 40 lbs. upgrade. I wish more weight upgrades were available. It is VERY difficult to rerack the bar; it takes extraordinary finesse to settle the weights into the rack system, much more so than any weight system I've ever worked with. As with as all Bowflex Selectech equipment, the dumbbell/barbell has to be racked for you to change weights. Obviously, this is meant as a safety feature, but it is completely stupid and effectively eliminates the ability to do drop-sets with an level of efficacy.

This also requires some modification to the base unit but that is clearly spelled out in the instructions. 120 total pounds is plenty for me for light resistance training and PT.
